Chronic abdominal pain

Chronic abdominal pain is a common problem. The vast majority of patients will have a functional disorder, most commonly irritable bowel syndrome or constipation. Initial workup/assessment is focused on differentiating benign, functional illness from organic pathology. While many organic conditions result in chronic diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome may present with pain plus constipation (IBS-C) or an alternating bowel habit (diarrhoea and constipation, IBS-M).
