There are a number of common gastrointestinal conditions, disorders and diseases that may cause problems. These include:

Diarrhoea is the condition of having 3 or more loose or liquid bowel movements per day. Acute diarrhoea comes on suddenly and lasts 5-10 days. Chronic diarrhoea lasts for more than 2 weeks. Common symptoms associated with diarrhoea include abdominal cramps, an urgent need to go to the toilet, nausea and/or vomiting, fever and loss of appetite. Diarrhoea may be caused by infections (gastroenteritis), functional disorders (irritable bowel syndrome and functional diarrhoea), malabsorption (coeliac disease, chronic pancreatitis, lactose and fructose intolerance, bacterial overgrowth), drugs (laxatives, caffeine) and inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease).
