There are a number of common gastrointestinal conditions, disorders and diseases that may cause problems. These include:

Fructose malabsorption

Fructose malabsorption may cause symptoms that are similar to lactose intolerance. Absorption of fructose is impaired by deficient fructose carriers in small bowel enterocytes. This results in an increased concentration of fructose in the gut. In the colon, fructose that hasn't been adequately absorbed, osmotically reduces the absorption of water and is metabolized by normal colonic bacteria. Dietary avoidance of foods high in fructose, fructans, sorbitol or fructose corn syrup (fizzy drinks) is required. A low FODMAP diet may be helpful.
