Microscopic colitis is a benign condition characterised by chronic watery (secretory) diarrhoea without bleeding. It usually occurs in middle-aged patients but can affect children. The colon appears normal by colonoscopy. The diagnosis is established by biopsy of the colonic mucosa which reveals the characteristic features of the condition. There are 2 different types of microscopic colitis: lymphocytic colitis and collagenous colitis.
