Small bowel bacterial overgrowth

Small bowel bacterial overgrowth is characterised by malabsorption associated with an increased number and/or type of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Affected patients may be asymptomatic or have one or more symptoms including bloating, abdominal discomfort, watery diarrhoea, wind and dyspepsia. Causes of bacterial overgrowth include small bowel diverticulosis, surgically created blind loops, strictures (Crohn's disease, radiation, post-surgery), diabetes mellitus, scleroderma, pseudoobstruction and chronic pancreatitis.
