A number of gastrointestinal investigations apart from endoscopy may be very helpful in establishing a diagnosis and in deciding the best treatment. These include:
A specialised scan to assess and measure bile turnover in the gut; used to investigate diarrhoea when bile acid malabsorption is suspected. A capsule containing radiolabelled bile acids is taken orally; levels are measured after a 7 day interval; a value of less than 15% indicates significant bile acid malabsorption.
